It has been a long minute since I last posted photos of Buddy, so here goes:

Also, my username used to be herbox... but I finally changed it to match my flickr username.  So I am good to go haha.

Buddy got a new bed from Petco.  It was $20 originally, but on clearance for $4!  I also have a part-time job at Petco now, so it is nice getting discounts and seeing animals all of the time!  :)

my kitten jake was playing with the zipper on my boyfriend's hoodie. he suddenly passed out with the zipper still in his mouth! it was the cutest thing in the world. he always falls asleep on the spot after a hard day of playing. sometimes, he even falls asleep while he's sitting. he melts my heart. ♥

[info]karmen said it was OK to post this here.

The furkids and I have been supporting for quite a while the Fort Bragg Animal Shelter in Mendocino County, CA. (Angelus helped me choose gently used toys to send to "my inmate brothers" around Christmas time - it barely made a dent in their bowl of toys) and now the genius politicians in the county have decided they want to shut down the shelter due to budget restrictions.

We're fighting with all we have to keep the shelter open, and all we need is a signature in the petition at the link below, nothing else. If you don't want your name displayed, that's fine too. It takes 2 seconds, and we need 2,500 signatures by tomorrow. It doesn't matter where you are, we just need to show a massive amount of support, so if you're abroad, you can sign too.

Dear Kittypix Community,

Hi there! My name is Shelli. This is the first time I've seen this community, but just reading the first few pages and comments makes me feel at home here. We're all cat lovers! I was told of this community from a friend who has been a long-time viewer and poster, after something awful happened.

It's a really long story... but there's pics! )

Evy does some dog bonding [19 Mar 2010|09:52pm]

Some of you may be aware we recently adopted a new puppy! For the first 2 weeks 10 month old Evy was very much get the hell away from me! Then she got curious and curiouser. Now she is letting Dexter play with her! He can still be a tad rough but she easily runs off when she is done. Jasper wants nothing to do with Dexter. But at least Evy is doing well! Once the crazy pup chills out in a few months I bet they'll bond even more. My friend was able to catch a few seconds them playing together.

Other admirers of Elizabeth I... [19 Mar 2010|06:46pm]

helenmirren

[xashl3yx92]
I struggle to find others who have such an interest in Tudors history as I do, and seeing as my attention was first drawn to Helen Mirren by her portrayals of both Elizabeths, I figured this applied.

I'm interested in finding a creative outlet through historical roleplay, mainly centered around Henry VIII and Elizabeth I's reigns. I assume since many in this community are avid fans of Helen Mirren, that some may be familiar with or love the character Elizabeth enough to join me in writing her court. I'm entirely flexible as to whom I play (most likely would be Elizabeth or the Earl of Leicester), and I care not the gender of whom I play opposite with relation to their character (I know some people are picky over women playing males and vice versa, I am not).

I could possibly go AU with the history of it in general after a certain point, but I doubt it. Even if you've only seen the mini-series Elizabeth I, or just have a general interest, I can fill you in with any gaps or provide sites for better understanding. I would absolutely love it if I got a few people interested and we could form a small group of sorts (I could either create a community on LJ, we could find a way to roleplay on other sites (myspace, facebook, etc.), or even instant messaging).

Anyways, I'm sorry mods if this is not allowed, just inform me or delete it yourselves. If anyone is interested, either comment this post or PM me, either is fine and I'll give you more information. Thanks for your time! :)

Everything you want is everything you see [19 Mar 2010|11:06am]

[ music | From Ghost Town - Robert Forster ]

I think with the end of the fourth series, and the departure of the second cast, Skins and I have reached the end of our road. It wasn't that this was a bad series; the running theme of how much the kids were like their parents, even though they'd never admit it, was handled wisely and well, and never hammered home. And last night had some wonderful moments, from Panda's song to Emily's fingers to ending it where and how they did. I just can't face getting invested in another bunch of teens if it's going to be obligatory that one of them dies every time (and maybe my school was unusually safe, but we did not have a 12% mortality rate in the sixth form). It probably doesn't help that whereas last transition we had the then-intriguing Effy to carry us across, presumably this time we've only got Freddie's tiresome sister. I hope it carries on, and I hope it does well, because it's a better and truer portrayal of teenage life than we ever got. But I don't think I'll be there.
Also - there was one moment where I really thought it would turn out that Effy's Cthulhoid visions were true and there really was Something outside the world, trying to get in. That would have been amazing.

Not the sort of show I'd normally watch, but a girl I know was on Snog, Marry, Avoid last night, and what a hateful, homogenising little programme it is. Not being an idiot - unlike the other two victims - she gave as good as she got, but I was still flabbergasted by the presenter's cultish insistence on how wonderful natural was. This on a show which pretends that a computer is doing the makeovers. But then, even before that, you're a hypocrite if you're treating natural as inherently good on television. Or with language.

My problem with Tim Burton's Alice is not just that it's not Tim Burton enough, but that it's not Alice enough. Yes, the latter is made into a plot point - is she the right Alice? Has she lost her muchness? - but this feels like after the fact justification for the need to give her that most hateful of Hollywood must-haves, an Arc. The real Alice didn't have an arc because she didn't need one, she was just a sensible girl surrounded by very silly people, who told them so. And in giving her an arc, Burton has also been obliged to give Wonderland (or here Underland, which is appropriate given it doesn't feel very wonderful) a plot. An utterly generic epic fantasy plot - essentially the film Narnia (which had already been compromised by the inappropriate use of elements of Middle Earth) mixed with a few elements of Oz. I kept expecting a reversal or a twist on this well-worn, misplaced formula. Is it a spoiler to say I didn't get one?
(The trailers were good, though - Matt Smith has a perfect face for 3D)

I got a new computer a few weeks ago and decided it was finally time to get rid of the printer that hasn't worked for 3+ years to make room for the tower on my desk. I felt soooo guilty for taking away one of the printer nap spots, but I really should have saved my guilt, as we all know that cats will adapt:

TNG fics [18 Mar 2010|03:34pm]

emily_shore
So I've spent the afternoon uploading my old Star Trek: TNG fics to the Archive of Our Own. It's been fun re-reading them. Given that I wrote most of them five years ago, I'd say that they've held up pretty well.

I'd like to recommend one story in particular for your attention. I still think it's one of the better things I've written:

How to Advance Your Career Through Marriage
Jean-Luc Picard/Beverly Crusher, Jack Crusher/Beverly Crusher
In the Mirror Universe, Jack Crusher's death was no accident.
[warnings can be found by clicking on the link]

It has a sequel, c. 30k if I remember correctly, which I hope to post over the next few days. Let me know what you think!
